2-Dimensional Simulations of Pit Propagation and Multi-Pit Interactions

This work presents a reaction-transport model for pit propagation coupled with phase field method to the moving boundary at corroding surface. enables numerical simulations of simultaneous multiple pits in close proximity each other study interactions between under galvanostatic conditions, limited applied currents. Results show formation lacy covers over stainless steel, which is due undercutting surrounding surface, and reveal development complex morphologies arising from interaction neighboring pits; e.g., growth “pits within pits” evolution “champion pits.” Such observations are shrinkage total active surface sustain current as grow larger. The proposed can be valuable tool studying morphology more realistic scenarios when initiation sites present.
